Effective March 12th, 2025, significant tariff increases will impact steel and aluminum imports into the U.S. Businesses importing these materials must prepare for new costs and compliance requirements as the government enforces stricter trade policies.

Key Updates:

25% Tariff on All Steel & Aluminum Imports
A 25% tariff will apply to all imported steel and aluminum, including an expanded list of derivative products. Additional derivative classifications will be subject to tariffs once an efficient processing system is confirmed by the Secretary of Commerce.

Partial Tariffs on Certain Derivatives
If a steel or aluminum derivative does not fall under HTSUS Chapters 73 or 76, tariffs will only apply to the material content within the product, rather than the entire item.

200% Tariff on Russian Aluminum
Primary aluminum imports from Russia will be subjected to a steep 200% tariff, reflecting heightened trade restrictions.

Exemptions for U.S.-Sourced Materials
Products using U.S.-melted and poured steel or properly documented aluminum content may qualify for tariff exemptions, encouraging the use of domestic materials.

Cancelled Trade Agreements
Existing trade agreements with Canada, Mexico, the European Union, and other partners will no longer be in effect. In addition, Turkey will face a 50% tariff on steel exports to the U.S.

End of Exclusions & Exemptions
No new tariff exclusions will be issued after February 11, 2025. Most existing exclusions will expire on March 12th unless deemed valid under special provisions.

CBP Enforcement & Compliance Measures
Strict penalties will be imposed for misclassified goods, and duty drawbacks will not be permitted. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will release further guidance on required documentation to ensure compliance with the new regulations.

Foreign Trade Zones Impacted
Products entering Foreign Trade Zones after March 12th must be classified under privileged foreign status and will be subject to tariffs upon entry for consumption.
