Montreal’s Longshoremen’s Union and the Association of Maritime Employers have agreed to a 90-day mediation process to resolve their contract dispute, following a November 14th ruling by the Canada Industrial Relations Board.
The conflict is centered on pay and automation and escalated on November 10th when employers locked out workers after the union rejected a final contract offer. Months of labor disruptions at the port’s four container terminals have reportedly caused layoffs and business losses. Dispute resolution expert Gilles Charland will mediate the talks, with both parties agreeing to remain silent publicly during the process.
As one of Canada’s busiest ports, fixing this dispute is important to bring back stability and solve bigger labor problems. Radius is here to keep you updated during this time and is available if you have any questions or concerns.
