Dockworkers at the Port of Montreal are escalating their actions in response to ongoing labor disputes. Following a one day strike on Sunday, the workers have voted to initiate a partial, unlimited strike this week. This strike, which will involve approximately 1,200 longshore workers at two Tremont terminals, is set to commence on Thursday at 11 a.m.

Earlier this October, the situation escalated when the terminals experienced a three day overtime strike. The dockworkers are advocating for better conditions that include improved pay, a more manageable work-life balance, and favorable scheduling practices. Their contract expired on December 31st, 2023, and since October 10th, they have been actively refusing overtime.

In response to the potential impact of the strike on local businesses and the economy, the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses has urged the federal government to intervene and keep the port operational.
